Mission of the Hong Kong Brain Bee Competition cum educational activities
Neuroscience and knowledge of the human brain function is expanding rapidly in its scope in the management of neurological and health conditions such such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, depression, attention deficits and hyperactive disorders. It has been increasingly linked to technologies that advance daily life, health, disease prevention and therapies, as well as in improving education, learning, and the development of artificial intelligence. Countries such as US, Germany, Australia who are leaders of modern technologies have been promoting neuroscience in general education, with funding supporting neuroscience research and development. The Hong Kong Brain Foundation (HKBF) considers activities that could promote the interest/ awareness of the young population in neuroscience is timely and would enrich STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education in Hong Kong.
Following the mission of the International Brain Bee (IBB), HKBF will hold the first local Brain Bee Competition with aiming to motivate high school students to study knowledge about the brain, and to inspire them to consider careers related to neuroscience and therapies for neurological dysfunction. IBB was founded in 1999 by Dr. Norbert Myslinski of the University of Maryland, US. At present, competitions and the related educational activities of Brain Bee have been organized in 175 Local Chapters across all 6 continents annually, including Macau and mainland China. Brain Bee national champions are invited to compete in the International Brain Bee hosted by a neuroscience organization during an international conference each year. (http://www.thebrainbee.org/)
